Japan's emergence as a modern industrial power found its defining expression at Tokyo 1964, the first Olympics held in Asia. Jim McCourt won bronze in the lightweight boxing - Ireland's only medal - defeating four opponents before losing in the final to Józef Grudzień of Poland.
Sean McCafferty also reached the semi-final of the flyweight division, losing to the eventual gold medallist. Tony Cameron finished fifth in the equestrian three-day event, the best Irish equestrian result at those Games. Maeve Kyle competed in both the 400 metres and 800 metres. Derek McCleane advanced past the first round of the 800 metres. John Ryan finished fifth in judo.
Hammer thrower John Lawlor carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony.
