Pentathlon Ireland wraps up memorable World Championships in Madeira

A 24-strong Irish delegation, aged from seven to 52, travelled to Madeira this week to represent Ireland at the UIPM Biathle, Triathle and Laser Run World Championships.

The team, drawn from Dublin, Waterford and Sligo, competed across three disciplines: Biathle (run-swim-run), Triathle (running, swimming and laser pistol shooting) and Laser Run (running and shooting).

With almost 1,000 athletes competing across 12 age groups, the championships provided an opportunity for Ireland’s youngest competitors and experienced Masters athletes alike to compete on the world stage.

It proved Ireland’s most successful Biathle, Triathle and Laser Run World Championships on record, with strong performances across the age groups and valuable international experience gained.

All 24 athletes are members of Pentathlon Ireland, with regular training in Dublin under national coach Andrei Fedotov. Their participation reflects the growing opportunities for athletes of all ages to get involved in multisport competition.

Away from the races, which produced good performances, personal bests and, yes, even a few medals, there was plenty of time for friendships, family support and as much pizza, pasta and ice cream as possible in the Madeira sunshine.

Niav McNamara, CEO of Pentathlon Ireland, said:

“Pentathlon Ireland were delighted to send our largest ever team to these Championships. We couldn’t be prouder of this group of young (and not so young) athletes. What made this week special wasn’t just its successes, but the pure joy our athletes brought to each race. They embraced the challenges but never lost sight of having fun and supporting each other. The future of Pentathlon Ireland’s young squad is incredibly bright and this is only the beginning!”

The week was made possible by the commitment of the athletes, their families, coaches and volunteers, many of whom travelled to Madeira to support the Irish team.
