OCI briefing on Baku 2015

Pat Hickey in his role as President of the European Olympic Committees last night briefed National Federations in Dublin on the background to the first ever European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2015.

He said “for the benefit of the athletes of Europe we are very pleased to welcome everyone to the first European Games in June of 2015 in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan.

These games will reflect the energy and unity of Europe and bring new and meaningful competitions to our athletes as well as bind the European NOCs together with one common goal.”

Ireland’s Chef de Mission for Baku, Dermot Henihan, gave an overview of the Games which will include 49 Nations, 19 sports and 6,500 athletes.

He also briefed National Federation and Sports Council officials on the Baku qualification process, the Games competition schedule, and the impact of the Games in terms of Rio qualification places for certain sports.
