OCI Medical Appointment

Rod will work very closely with National Federation medical support teams and the emerging Institute of Sport to achieve these objectives.

Rod will have the responsibility for the following areas:

1) Education- To design and deliver appropriate educational programmes for athletes,coaches & medical personnel

2) Structure- To establish a network of medical specialists to co-operate in the health care of the potential Olympic athletes.
To act as a resource for National Governing Body (NGB)medical officers in setting up medical care structures, if necessary, within the NGB.
To liase with NGBs and their high performance amangers to facilitate appropriate exchange of information between medical, sport science and coaching personnnel in order to allow optimal holistic planning of athlete programmes.
Availability for early assessment of potential Olympic athletes, if required, and in screening athletes in the run up to Beijing.
To identify a network of hospital based specialists for investigation or treatment.
To work with the Irish Sports Council Anti-doping unit in providing athletes, coaches and medical personnel with current information on all aspects of regulations and procedures relevant to doping in sport.
To develop a system of audit of athlete’s injuries and illnesses.

3) Olympic Games: To work with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Physiotherapist in developing and implement the medical care programme for the Games and the preparatory training venues.
