We are honoured to receive a very unique gift from the London 2012 Organising Committee of the petal which represented our NOC during the lighting of the cauldron at the Olympic Games.
The remarkable cauldron that lit up the Stadium during the London Olympic Games 2012 was designed by renowned British architect Thomas Heatherwick. The cauldron represented each nation, consisting of a series of handmade copper “petals”, one for each of the 204 countries present. These petals were carried into the Stadium ahead of each competing nation in parade and placed on the cauldron before it was raised into its upright position.
We have now proudly placed this iconic symbol of Ireland’s participation (petal 001 of 204) at the London 2012 Games at the OCI headquarters.
