Ireland failed to qualify an Olympic slot from the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Bratislava yesterday. Canoe and kayak flatwater racing is very similar to rowing, in that competitors race across expanses of calm water, rather than slalom down white water rapids. But, it requires a very specialised technique that calls on strength, speed, stamina and co-ordination in equal measure. There are subtle differences in the construction of close-topped canoes and open-topped kayaks, as well as the technique used to propel them along the water, leading the two different categories. Rheinisch 9th in World Championship Final

Barry Watkins wins Canoe medals for Ireland

2012 bound paddler, Barry Watkins, of Salmon Leap Canoe Club took gold in the Junior 500m individual kayak class (K1) in Belgrade this morning. This is Ireland's first ever gold medal at Championship level in flat-water racing, which is an Olympic discipline since 1936.
