The European Olympic Committees (EOC) represent the Olympic interests of the 49 nations of Europe and Mr. Hickey will now serve another four year term until 2013. In that period he will oversee the continent’s challenge for Olympic success at the London Olympics 2012 and the finalisation of the arrangements to acknowledge the role of sport in the new European Union constitution.
Mr. Hickey, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland and sole Irish member of the International Olympic Committee and the highest ranked Irish administrator in the world of International sport, was congratulated by IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge on his re-election. “Pat is a superb leader, one who continues to help us manage and resolve the many issues that sport faces in Europe and beyond”. he commented.
In December, Pat Hickey will receive France’s highest decoration, the prestigious Legion d’Honneur, from French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris, in recognition of his contribution to Olympic sport in Europe.
