Pat McQuaid elected to the International Olympic Committee

He was elected to the IOC in the category of president of an international Olympic sports federation. Mr. McQuaid is president of the International Cycling Union where he has carried out a superb job for international cycling in recent years. He is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Pat hails from a family that has always had strong cycling roots and served as manager of the Irish cycling squad at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. He was the prime mover in bringing the Tour de France and many other international cycling events to Ireland.

Pat Hickey, the member for Ireland of the International Olympic Committee, proposed Mr. McQuaid at the IOC Session. “As a fellow Irishman I was proud to nominate Pat as a member of the IOC, the most powerful grouping in the world of sport. It’s great to have another Irish person on board this prestigious and influential organisation. We in the Olympic Council of Ireland look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead to help further the aims of the Olympic movement”.
