PERFORMANCE ROUND UP – MARCH 2026

ATHLETICS

European Throwing Cup – Nicosia, Cyprus 

Ireland’s throwers produced a series of strong performances at the European Throwing Cup in Nicosia. 

  • Nicola Tuthill secured her first senior international medal, winning silver in the hammer throw with a new personal best of 72.48m. The mark continues a rapid progression for the Cork athlete as she establishes herself among Europe’s leading hammer throwers. 
  • In the men’s shot put, Olympian Eric Favors claimed bronze with a best throw of 19.68m, adding another international medal to his career. 
  • Elsewhere, Niamh Fogarty, Ireland’s national record holder in the discus, threw 52.70m to finish 14th overall, while Conor Cusack produced a personal best of 75.83m in the javelin, finishing 11th. 

 

2026 World Indoor Championships

  • Kate O’Connor delivered another landmark moment for Irish athletics, securing bronze in the pentathlon
  • Nicholas Griggs delivered an impressive performance to finish 9th in the men’s 3000m (7:39.03), with Andrew Coscoran placing 13th in the same event (7:43.89). 
  • In the middle-distance events, Mark English finished 14th in the men’s 800m (1:46.70), while in the women’s 800m, Maeve O’Neill placed 18th (2:02.46) and Emma Moore ran 2:02.00 to finish 5th in her heat. Notably, O’Neill progressed to the semi-finals. 
  • On the sprint side, Lauren Roy placed 19th in the women’s 60m (7.23), with Ciara Neville finishing 31st (7.31). Roy also advanced to the semi-finals. In the men’s 60m, Bori Akinola ran 6.60 to finish 15th overall, progressing to the semi-finals. 
  • In the hurdles, Sarah Lavin placed 32nd in the women’s 60m hurdles (8.08). 
  • In the men’s 1500m, James Gormley finished 29th overall (3:50.71). 

 

New York Half Marathon 

  • Peter Lynch produced a historic run at the New York Half Marathon, becoming the first Irishman to break the 60-minute barrier for the distance. Lynch finished 5th overall in 59:52, marking a significant milestone in Irish distance running and placing him among a small group of European athletes to run under the one-hour mark. 

BADMINTON

  • Nhat Nguyen competed at the All-England Championship and finished in the round of 16. Nhat put up a strong performance against the world number 6, Li Shi Feng losing out in three games 17-21, 21-12, 21-11 in a 78 minute match.
  • In the Portugal International championships, Sophia Noble had a Last 16 finish in the Women’s Singles, while Orla and Siofra Flynn had a Quarterfinal finish in the Women’s Doubles.

CYCLING

Lara Gillespie claims her first victory of the season in the Le Samyn road race in Belgium after a brilliant sprint to the finish, competing with UAE Team ADQ.

EQUESTRIAN 

  • Ireland’s senior show jumping team delivered an excellent performance to finish second at the Longines League of Nations in Ocala, Florida, continuing their strong run in elite international competition. 

GYMNASTICS 

2026 Antalya World Cup 

  • Eamon Montgomery opened the finals on floor exercise, producing a clean and expressive routine executed with precision. Montgomery, who had qualified fifth, delivered under pressure to score 13.833, earning silver behind the Philippines’ Eldrew Yulo. 
  • Later in the session, Olympic Champion Rhys McClenaghan led a superb Irish performance on pommel horse. Competing first in the final after qualifying third earlier in the week, McClenaghan scored 13.900 to take gold, holding the lead throughout the final. 
  • Teammate James Hickey, competing in only his third senior World Cup, followed with a strong routine of 13.566 to claim bronze, completing a double podium for Ireland on the apparatus. 

HOCKEY

The Irish Men’s and women’s hockey teams qualify for the FIH World Cup, after competing in the Qualifiers tournament in Santiago, Chile.

SAILING 

Mallorca Sailing Club Regatta 

  • Eve McMahon finished 2nd in the ILCA 6 class, continuing a consistent run of results in international regattas. 
  • In the ILCA 7 class, Fiachra McDonnell also claimed 2nd place, delivering another podium finish for Irish sailors at the event. 

SWIMMING

Tyr Pro Swim Series

Mona McSharry and Daniel Wiffen put on a number of fine performances over the weekend at the 2026 Tyr Pro Swim Series.
McSharry came away with a gold and a silver, while Wiffen picked up two bronze medals in Westmont, Illinois.

  • 50 Breast: 30.88 (Gold)
  • 100 Breast: 1:06.59 (Silver)

Daniel Wiffen

  • 800m Free: 8:07.21 (Bronze)
  • 1500m Free: 15:34.94 (Bronze)

 

Giant Open Meet, Paris

  • John Shortt produced the performance of the weekend, setting a new Irish Senior Record in the 200m Backstroke with a time of 1:56.07 to take gold, lowering his previous mark of 1:56.19 set during his World Junior gold medal campaign. The National Centre Limerick swimmer also broke the Irish 100m Backstroke record, clocking 53.37 to win silver, and added another silver medal in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 25.01.  
  • Competing in the same venue that will host the 2026 European Championships this summer, Ellen Walshe delivered an outstanding series of performances, securing multiple podium finishes. She claimed silver in the 400m Individual Medley (4:39.71), before adding further silver medals in the 200m Butterfly (2:09.19) and 200m Individual Medley (2:10.97), underlining her consistency across disciplines.  
  • Ellie McCartney continued her strong form with multiple podium finishes, securing silver in the 200m Breaststroke (2:24.51) and adding another silver in the 100m Breaststroke Final (1:07.46). She was also narrowly outside the medals in the 200m Individual Medley, finishing fourth in 2:12.60, just seven hundredths of a second off the podium.  
  • National Centre Limerick swimmers Eoin Corby and Jack Cassin both recorded fifth-place finishes, with Corby clocking 2:14.60 in the 200m Breaststroke and Cassin posting 1:59.54 in the 200m Butterfly Final. Cassin also placed 7th in the 100m Butterfly (53.32).
