Rio Recap: Team Ireland’s Day 12/16

Women’s Golf Stroke Play:

Leona Maguire, Round 1: 74 (T44)

Leona Maguire went through her opening front nine in 36, with a birdie at the first and bogies at the second and sixth holes.

A double bogie at the tenth proved a major setback and she dropped back to +5 at the 15th before a fine birdie at 16 helped her back to +3 for the day in a tie for 48th.

Maguire is one of only three amateurs in the field of 60 golfers. Her fellow amateurs Albane Valenzuela (SUI) and Tiffany Chan (HKG) finished the day on level par.

Stephanie Meadow, Round1: 77 (T51)

Stephanie Meadow had a difficult start to her Olympic campaign with bogies at the first and second before stabilising with a par on three.

She birdied the fifth to go out in 36 but, like Maguire, had a double bogie at the 10th.

Further dropped shots at 12, 14, and 15 saw her get around in +6, 11 shots behind leader Inbee Park (KOR) on -5.

Athletics:

Women’s 800m Heat 1, Ciara Everard: 7th in 2:07.91

After a season blighted by injury, Ciara Everard mustered a time of 2:07.91 in her heat of the Women’s 800m Heats in Rio. Her time was just outside her season’s best of 2:07.77 but some distance back from her personal best of 2:01,21. She finished 7th in her heat and ranked 57th of 65 athletes.

Tori Pena has announced her retirement from International Athletics

Getting emotional here so this will be long winded… Since 2010 I’ve had the pleasure and absolute honor of representing Ireland. This morning was my last time putting on my uniform and proudly giving it my all. I’ve competed at 3 World Championships, 5 European Championships and 2 Olympic Games. But so much more importantly, I’ve had the honor to compete with some amazing women. (Seriously, women’s pole vault is on fire and I’m happy to say I’ve competed with these athletes) I’ve made friends with ladies from around the world who have shown me strength, courage, bravery, and joy. This journey has been painstaking and heart wrenching. It’s been beautiful and profound. I’ve learned more about myself than I ever thought imaginable. Believe in yourself people, you’ll be surprised what you can achieve. I also can’t even begin to name all the people who have helped me along the way. From high school coaches and school teachers. To my amazing training partners, coaches, and therapists. Friends and athletes who have picked me up from the airport at strange hours and given me a place to sleep or a ride to the next meet with my poles. The list goes on full of odd and obscure favors from people in the pole vault community and far beyond. I’ve loved every minute of it! thank you, thank you, thank you
