Sailing:

Annalise Murphy had her best day on the water at Rio 2016 to move into first in the overall rankings of the Women’s Laser Radial Class. The 20 knot conditions suited the Irish sailor as she finished second in Race 6, just seven seconds behind race winner Anne-Marie Rindom (DEN).

Earlier she had finished 5th in Race 5 meaning she has a one-point lead over Rindom in the current rankings, with a rest day to come on Thursday.

It was a solid afternoon’s work for Finn Lynch in the Men’s Laser class to consolidate his overall ranking of 24th place. Lynch was in the top 10 through the first two marks of Race 5 before crossing the line in 18th place and was the 30th boat home in Race 6, but three disqualifications reduced his score to 27 points.

Rowing:

The windy conditions which helped Ireland’s cause in the sailing competition was of little use to the rowers, whose schedule was cancelled for the second time at the Rio 2016 games

Swimming:

Fiona Doyle rounded off her first Olympic experience by coming second in her 200m breaststroke heat. The Limerick woman was half a second clear of the field after 50m and held the lead through the next two turns before losing out to Argentine swimmer Julia Sebastian.

A finish time of 2:29.76 was 1.01 seconds outside her qualifying time for the event, seeing her rank 25th overall and outside the semi-final places. “I’ll have to look at the tapes and see what happened,” she said in the mixed zone after her race.

Boxing:

There was disappointment for Joe Ward in his first bout in the Men’s Light Heavy (81kg) division, losing by split decision to Andres Carles Mina. The Ecuadorian came for a fight and got one as Ward couldn’t impose himself on a scrappy bout.

“I thought I did enough to win the fight,” Ward told RTE Sport. “The referee gave me two public warnings for no real reason.”
“I was trying to box from long range. Just disappointed now with the result but what can I do.”
