Sailing secure place at 2016 Olympic Games

James Espey qualifies Ireland’s first nation place at the Rio 2016 Olympics for sailing when he managed to qualify his Laser Standard class boat for the Gold Fleet just two days into the six day competition.

“James is building momentum. He’s jumped the qualification hurdle and will now be focusing on getting a personal best,” said ISA Performance Director, James O’Callaghan.

Team Ireland Chef de Mission Kevin Kilty was on hand to witness the competition. “I’m delighted that we have an early nation spot for Sailing. The work of the ISA and their performance unit is paying dividends in this critical qualification period.”
