Seaton and McGovern in fifth

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern are in fifth place after day one of the 49er event at the ISAF World Sailing Championships in Perth.

The pair finished 2nd, 4th and 11th in their first three races in unseasonable rain and wind. 14 nations from the 49er fleet in Perth will qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.

In the Star class, Peter O’Leary and David Burrows were 33rd and 3rd on day two of their regatta to lie 9th overall – though they were forced to use their ‘discard’ to discount their worst result. The first 11 nations in the Star will gain Olympic berths.

In the men’s Laser, James Espey is 56th of 147 boats after finishing 18th and 22nd in two races. He needs to make it into the top 35 to secure an Olympic spot
