Silver lining for Reid

Aileen Reid produced a fantastic performance at the weekend to win silver at the World triathlon champions grand final.  She did so on the London olympic triathlon course where she had crashed out of contention on last summer.

It started out with a fast swim in the Serpentine lake, where Aileen was 5th after the opening 750m and right in the lead pack at the swim exit after 1500m.

Over the 40km cycle a lead group of 21 elite women formed who were clear of the chasing pack, meaning the winners were all going to come from the lead group.

GB’s Non Stanford lead from the front, while Aileen lead a chase pack of six working together to try and close the gap.

The group of six started to whittle away and in the end it was a sprint off between Aileen and former world number one Emma Moffatt (AUS).

Aileen won the sprint to take the silver and Ireland’s best elite triathlon result to date.
