Sochi 1 Year To Go!

Today marks the 1 year to go to Sochi (Russia) Winter Olympics 2014.    The Games will run from 7th – 23rd February with more than 3000 athletes competing in seven sports and 15 disciplines.   The programme includes 12 new events, including women’s ski jumping and slope-style snowboarding and skiing.

Team Ireland expect to be represented at these Games with the following disciplines:- snowboarding,  alpine skiing and figure skating. (male & female athletes).

Our Sports Director – Martin Burke is at present in Sochi to attend the Chef de Missions Seminar.  He has advised us that “These will be terrific Games.  The Russian Organising Committee have shown that they are well advanced in their preparations.  Some venues are already complete and have held test events.  The design of venues is amazing and will add greatly to the spectacle of the Games.  Also, for a winter Olympic Games the whole layout is very compact and that will be much appreciated by the athletes, spectators and National Olympic Committees alike”.

Sochi 2014 will be the most compact Winter Games in the history of the Olympic Movement. It will be possible to get from one venue to another in just a matter of minutes and all Olympic competition will take place in the same area.

Eleven athletic venues will be built for the Sochi 2014 Games, which will be divided into two clusters—mountain and coastal. The clusters will be located within 48km of each other, which is less than a 30 minute ride along a new railway.

Each cluster will contain an Olympic Village. The travel time from the Olympic Village to a competition venue in the coastal cluster will be no more than five minutes. Additionally, travel time from the Olympic Village to a competition venue in the mountain cluster is less than 15 minutes.

Both freestyle skiers have their sights firmly set on gold in Sochi, and will be competing in disciplines making their Olympic debut (ski half-pipe & ski slope-style).
