Business like opening from Burnett

Trap shooter Derek Burnett has opened his Olympic campaign with a solid start. 24 targets out of 25 saw him finish well following a single miss on the 19th target. The second round was dogged by heavy rain and dark conditions, not ideal for a sport that relies so heavily on vision.

Derek’s second round was completed with just two missed targets for an intermediate score of 47 out of 50. He is well placed for his last round of the day which is at 1pm and a strong finish here will leave him on the shoulder of the leaders overnight.

At the intermediate stage the leaders are:

Jesus Serrano (ESP) 49 ex 50

Karsten Bindrich (GER) 49 ex 50

Anton Glasnovic (CRO) 49 ex 50

Derek Burnett (IRL) 47 ex 50

(Update: 14:00)

Burnett finished with another 23 for a first day score of 70 ex 75. This leaves Burnett outside the leading pack of shooters and a perfect second day performance will be required to keep him in the running.

The overnight leader is two time gold medalist Michael Diamond of Australia on the perfect score of 75 ex 75.

Tomorrow sees a further two rounds to complete the qualification stage of the competition.
