VOLLEYBALL

Indoor Volleyball was added to the Olympic programme from Men and Women in 1964.

This is the version which has 6 players on each team and is played one a 9 mx8m court divided by a net, the top of which is 2.43m from the ground. After the serve, to get the game started, the opposing team must use a combination of no more than three contacts with the ball to return the ball to the opponent’s side of the net. A point is scored when the ball contacts the floor within the court boundaries or when an error is made: when the ball strikes one team’s side of the court, the other team gains a point; and when an error is made, the team that did not make the error is awarded a point.

The other version of the sport which is on the Olympic programme, is played on a sandy surface and is known as Beach Volleyball. It made its Olympic debut at the at the Atlanta Games in 1996. There are only 2 players per team in the Beach version, which is played on a slightly smaller court than the indoor game, however the net is the same height from the ground. Similar to the 6 man game the objective of the game is to send the ball over the net and to ground it on the opponent’s side of the court, and to prevent the same effort by your opposition. Each team is allowed up to three touches to return the ball across the net.
