About Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a dynamic combat sport that combines the punching techniques of boxing with the kicking skills of martial arts disciplines such as karate and Muay Thai. Athletes score points through clean and controlled strikes to permitted target areas, while some formats also allow contests to be won by stoppage.

Competitors compete in weight categories and wear protective equipment, including gloves, with bouts overseen by referees and judged on factors such as technique, accuracy, control and effectiveness. The sport features several disciplines, including point fighting, light contact and full contact, offering opportunities for athletes with different styles and strengths. Point fighting, which emphasises speed, precision and tactical awareness, is the format most commonly featured at major multi-sport events.

Governed internationally by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), kickboxing is recognised by the IOC and continues to grow around the world. While it has not yet been included on the Olympic programme, the sport has featured at every edition of the European Games since 2015, providing an important international stage for athletes to compete at the highest level.

Ireland has a strong tradition in kickboxing, producing European and world-class performers across multiple disciplines. Irish athletes have proudly represented Team Ireland at the European Games, showcasing the skill, dedication and competitive spirit that continue to drive the sport forward nationwide.
