About Modern Pentathlon

Modern pentathlon combines fencing, swimming, show jumping and a combined discipline of laser pistol shooting and cross-country running (formerly run as separate riding and combined events), a format designed by the Olympics' founder Pierre de Coubertin to test the all-round accomplishments of a nineteenth-century cavalry officer, making it one of the more unusual and demanding tests on the Olympic programme.

Ireland has been represented in the sport at recent Games, most notably by Natalya Coyle, a three-time Olympian who competed at London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
