Surfing made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, contested in ocean waves at a designated surf break, with competitors judged on the difficulty, execution and style of the waves they ride within a heat. Its inclusion, alongside skateboarding and sport climbing, was part of a deliberate push by the Olympic movement to add younger, board-sport audiences to the Games.
