Chloe Magee lost to Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong in the opening round of the women’s singles at the World Badminton Championships in Copenhagen today (Mon).
Magee took some good points off the former world top 10 player but lost 15-21, 15-21.
Later in the day, in the mixed doubles, Magee and brother Sam lost to Hung Ling Chen and Wen Hsing Cheng of Chinese Taipei.
The first game could have gone either way, with the Taiwanese pair just edging it at 23-22. They then closed out the match when they won the second game 21-17.
This was a good performance against a steadily improving pair ranked No 35 in the world and rising fast – Hung Ling Chen was world ranked No 5 with a previous partner.
In the men’s singles, Scott Evans got a walkover into the second round when world No 14 Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand pulled out. Evans, who is in confident form after winning the men’s singles at the Brazil Open a few weeks ago, now plays David Obernosterer of Austria.
The Irish No 1 will fancy his chances against a player who went out in the opening round of the Yonex Irish Open last December. Evans is currently ranked 49, with Obernosterer at 96.
