Olympic Council of Ireland Chef de Mission Tom Rafter and Sports Director Martin Burke visited Trabzon, Turkey recently for a pre European Youth Olympic recce with other European NOC’s.
There are some new facilities to be completed , but they will be ready in time for competition to begin on the 24th – 29th July.
General Coordinator of EYOF Trabzon 2011, Nihat Doker informed that they would compensate the small deficiencies, which were determined by the technical delegates of 9 sports, in a very short time.
The Irish delegation also finalised arrangements for the Irish Team’s pre Games camp accomodation and facilities in Trabzon.
Burke said “Trabzon is an ideal venue for the EYOF. The brand new Olympic Village will house 3,500 athletes and officials in comfort and will be used after the Games as additional University accomodation.
The completed venues will be state of the art and a valuable asset to the city once the Games are completed”
Ireland will be represented in 5 sports, Athletics , Cycling, Gymnastics, Swimming and Tennis, and the team will be announced shortly.
