Track Cycling World Cup

Irish track cyclists Caroline Ryan and Eoin Mullen are set to race in the track cycling World Cup in Mexico this week, from the 17th – 19th January. Both riders will be racing in two disciplines over the competition, with Mullen aiming to gain enough points to qualify for the World Championships in Minsk next month.

Ryan has already qualified for the World Championships in the Individual Pursuit along with Olympian Martyn Irvine, who impressively won two silver medals at the World Cup in Glasgow last month.

Last year Ryan secured a bronze medal at the World Championships in the Points race, in which she will once again compete. The former international rower will also line up in the individual pursuit, a discipline she has dominated domestically since 2010.

Under 23 rider Mullen, from the Aran Islands, has been continuing to improve and gain experience on the world level, and will line up in both the sprint and the keirin races. Based in Aigle, Switzerland, Mullen has been working under some of the World’s top sprint coaches, and will gain a lot from the experience of racing in the senior ranks. Qualification for the World Championships would be a huge achievement for the second year senior.

Speaking before the event Cycling Ireland’s CEO Geoff Liffey said

“Mexico is the final World Cup event for 2013 and represents an important opportunity for our two Irish competitors to secure their qualification slots for next month’s upcoming World Championships in Belarus.”

The competition takes place in Aguascalientes, Mexico, between January 17th and 19th.
