On a great day of Irish medal success at the European Youth Olympics in Trabzon, Turkey, all eyes were on the 16 year old Kiely twins, Ben and Megan from Waterford’s Ferrybank AC.
First up, Ben Kiely, the Irish youths record holder, raced to win gold for Ireland by taking the boys 400 metres hurdles title in a time of 52.69 from Britain’s highly rated Jacob Paul. It was an impressive run and Ben took total command of the race in the final 150 metres, winning with relative ease. “I needed a good start and that’s what I got,” he said. “The pressure was huge but I focused on keeping my stride lengths consistent and reserving some strength for the final dash to the tape. This medal means a lot to my family and to my friends on a brilliant Irish team out here”
Ten minutes later, his twin sister Megan, after seeing Ben win gold, was just pipped for a silver medal in the girls 400 metres hurdles final in a race won by the Bulgarian favourite, Yerameyenka. “I’m delighted with my bronze medal and thrilled that Ben did the business. We’ve had a brilliant time out here and the competition has been fierce but exhilarating”.
The Kiely twins recorded personal bests, Ben a 52.69 and Megan 1:00.44 – both are new Irish records.
