Weymouth venue ready for 2012 Olympics

The £15 million complex, which will also host the Paralympics events, was brought in under budget and ahead of schedule.

The world-class facility will play host to 400 athletes completing in 10 Olympic sailing categories.

David Higgins, the chief executive of the ODA, said: “Weymouth & Portland was the first venue for 2012 to start construction work, so reaching the final stages of the project is another important milestone”.

The British sailing team’s successes at the Beijing Olympics included a haul of six medals, four of them gold and the early completion of this venue gives them an opportunity to train and prepare in Weymouth during the build-up to 2012. It will be vital that Irish athletes start thre process of training and preparing at this venue to maximise their chances in 2012.

Olympic Council of Ireland’s Stephen Martin said “This venue is virtually on our doorstep;preparation for 2012 Games will involve less time travelling around the world , and its important that athletes have the resource to establish a base in the area to enable them to gain vital experience at every opportunity over the next 4 years”
