Aoife, who is the pilot of the Irish Women’s bobsleigh team, will carry the Irish tricolour in the parade of over 80 nations taking part in the Winter Olympic Games.
“I am absolutely thrilled at being given this honour,” she said. “It’s been a rough few days out here in Vancouver with all the legal action swirling around the bobsleigh team, but this move has lifted our spirits in a big way.”
A world wide TV audience of 3 billion will watch the Opening Ceremony.
