World Athletics round up

David Gillick qualified for one of the forthcoming (3x) semi finals at the World Championships. The Dundrum South Dublin runner finished second in his heat of the 400m in a time of 45.54 nearly a second off his season’s best. Gillick semi final takes place tomorrow at 17:15 (Irish time). Gillick’s heat was won by Great Britain’s Robert Tobin in a time of 45.50.

Paul Hession finished third in his 200m quarter-final this evening to book his place in tomorrow’s semis at the World Championships in Berlin. Derval O’Rourke earlier ran a season’s best to progress to the penultimate round of the 100m hurdles.

Deirdre Ryan went out of the high jump in the qualification stage. Ryan cleared 1.85m but was unable to jump 1.89m and did not progress to Thursday’s final. Ryan will be disappointed as she had already jumped 1.93m this season.

Sli Culann’s Deirdre Byrne started the 1,500m well and at the halfway point she was well placed in the middle of the pack but she could not keep pace in the final lap and finished 11th in a time of 4:12.19.
