World Champion Rob Heffernan Win’s Grand Prix

World Champion Rob Heffernan (Togher AC) continued his preparations for the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich with a victory in the International Race-Walking Grand Prix in Naumburg, Germany at the weekend.

Heffernan dropped down in distance to 20km for the race and showed his class by winning the race in a time of 1:21.07, ahead of Christopher Linke (SC Potsdam) second in a time of 1:21.18. It was an encouraging performance by Heffernan with the major goal for the year being the 50km race at the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich.

In the same race Alex Wright (Calry AC) finished sixth in a time of 1:23.52 with Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny AC) eleventh in a time of 1:28.24.

At the Loughborough International Ben Reynolds (North Down AC) made his season’s debut in the 110m hurdles finishing second in a time of 13.79. The race was run into a -0.8 headwind and was won by Lawrence Clarke (England) in a time of 13.56. It was an impressive run by Reynolds and only just outside the 13.65 qualifying standard for the European Championships.
