Young Swimmer to Carry Irish Flag at Closing Ceremony

The Olympic Council of Ireland has chosen 14 year old Mona McSharry from Co. Sligo as the Irish flag bearer at the Closing Ceremony in Baku’s National Stadium tomorrow (Sun June 28).

 

Mona, who swims with Ballyshannon S.C., is the youngest member of Team Ireland and will join flag bearers from 50 nations at what is expected to be a spectacular Closing Event extravaganza in Azerbaijan.

 

Mona commented: “I’m very excited and honoured to be the flag bearer”. She follows in the footsteps of Katie Taylor who carried the Irish flag at the opening of the European Games.

 

Pat Hickey, President of the Olympic Council said that Mona was a superb representative of the 14 sports on Team Ireland. “Mona and the entire team have done brilliantly in Baku in the face of severe competition. They were great ambassadors for our country at these inaugural European Games”.

 

Over 6,000 athletes from all over the continent competed in Baku in what was a spectacular and well organised event, featuring many state-of-the-art venues
