Seán Casey competed for Ireland in the men's heavyweight coxless four at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, finishing 10th overall alongside Jonno Devlin, Seán O'Neill and Cormac Folan.
From Killarney, Co. Kerry, Casey is a member of Muckross Rowing Club - based on the shores of Lough Leane - and was one of three Killarney rowers who competed for Ireland at Beijing, alongside clubmates Paul Griffin and Cathal Moynihan, all three receiving a civic send-off from the people of Killarney before their departure.
He attended Temple University in Philadelphia on a rowing scholarship from 1997 to 2001 under head coach Gavin White, winning the Dad Vail Regatta and the BIG EAST Championship and earning a reputation as one of the most dedicated and consistent athletes his coach had encountered.
He subsequently completed a Masters degree in Sports Performance at the University of Limerick. He was part of the crew that won a World Cup bronze medal in Munich in 2005 and qualified Ireland for Beijing at the 2007 World Rowing Championships - the first Irish men's heavyweight crew to reach the Olympics in almost 20 years.
After retiring from competition he became head coach at Reading University before returning to Ireland as Head Coach of the Rowing Ireland heavyweight men's and women's squads in 2016.
