Derval O'Rourke competed for Ireland in the women's 100 metres hurdles at three consecutive Olympic Games - Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 - in a career that made her one of the most decorated Irish track and field athletes of her era.
At Athens 2004 she did not advance from the heats, having been hospitalised with an appendix-related illness and struck down by food poisoning in the weeks beforehand. At Beijing 2008 she again did not advance from the heats, finishing 6th in 13.22 seconds - a performance that belied her world-class standing between the four-year cycles. At London 2012 she at last reached the semi-finals, running a season's best of 12.91 seconds.
Her finest achievements came away from the Olympics. At the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow she won gold in the 60 metres hurdles in a world-class time of 7.84 seconds, becoming the first Irish woman ever to win a world indoor athletics title - breaking the Irish record twice on her way to the podium. She won silver at the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 and again in Barcelona in 2010, setting an Irish outdoor record of 12.65 seconds in the latter final. At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin she reached the final and finished 6th in 12.67 seconds, a time that was then an Irish record. She also won bronze at the European Indoor Championships in 2009 and 2013.
From Cork, O'Rourke attended University College Dublin on a sports scholarship and graduated with a BA before completing a Diploma in Business Studies at UCD Smurfit. She was coached throughout her career by Sean and Terrie Cahill. Her outdoor Irish record of 12.65 seconds stood until 2023, when it was broken by Sarah Lavin. She subsequently became an RTÉ athletics pundit and presenter of Ireland's Fittest Family, and was inducted into the Athletics Ireland Hall of Fame in 2025. She is married to Beijing 2008 sailing Olympian Peter O'Leary.
