Niall Bruton competed in the men's 1,500 metres at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, qualifying from his heat in 3rd place before going out in the semi-final.
Bruton was a former scholarship student at the University of Arkansas under the legendary coach John McDonnell, through whom he developed into one of the finest Irish middle-distance runners of his generation. In 1991, he became the then youngest Irishman to run a sub-four minute mile and that same year won a World Student Games title.
He won the NCAA indoor mile in both 1992 and 1993 and in 1994 won the famous Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden - the most prestigious indoor mile in the world.
He reached the final of the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg and reduced his 1,500 metres personal best to a world-class 3:35.67 in Cologne - only Ray Flynn had run faster for Ireland.
