Gary Ryan competed in the men's 200 metres at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, where he set a new Irish national record of 20.78 seconds, becoming the first Irish athlete to break the 21-second barrier. He later represented Ireland at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as part of the men's 4x100 metres relay team that established a new Irish record of 39.26 seconds. A late entrant to athletics after playing soccer throughout his teenage years, Ryan went on to become one of Ireland's most respected sprinters and relay athletes.
Following his competitive career, Ryan has made a significant contribution to Irish high performance sport as a coach and performance leader. He served as Head of Capability & Expertise at the Sport Ireland Institute, helping to develop performance systems and support services for Ireland's leading athletes and coaches, before being appointed Performance Director of Triathlon Ireland in 2026. He continues to coach athletes competing at Olympic, Paralympic, World and European level, combining his experience as an Olympian with a passion for developing sporting excellence.
