Ireland’s Barry Murphy has advanced to the European Championships 50m Breaststroke semi-finals on the fifth day of competition at the Europa-Sportpark in Berlin, Germany.
Murphy posted a time of 28.01 to finish 5th in his heat and 14th overall to secure his place in the last 16.
Speaking after the race, Murphy who trains at Swim Irelands Performance Centre at the National Aquatic Centre commented “Job done this morning, I’ve been waiting around for 3 days now so it was good to get on the blocks and blow off the cobwebs. Obviously I’ll need to go faster to make top 8 but I’ll go back and look at the race with my coach and see where we can make some gains. It will be tight for top 8 tonight so I have a job to do now”.
Great Britain’s Adam Peaty set a new championship record in Murphy’s heat to go into the semi-finals as the fastest qualifier in 26.91 seconds.
Murphy will swim in the first semi-final this evening at 6.26pm.
Nicholas Quinn and Dan Sweeney also swam the heats of the 50m Breaststroke. Both were just off their best times with Sweeney finishing second in his heat in 29.49 seconds and Quinn clocking 29.07.
Brendan Hyland swam his last race of the championships this morning in the 100m Butterfly Heats. The 19 year old put in a good morning swim to finish just 1 second off his best time in 55.52.
