Maxie McCullagh was the European lightweight boxing champion in 1949 and competed in the 1948 London Olympic Games displaying the form that would bring him that European title the following year. From Mullingar, McCullagh was the three-time Army boxing champion and the national champion of 1947 and 1948. In London he won two impressive bouts against Tauno Rinkinen of Finland and Ron Cooper of Great Britain before losing a close third-series bout to Svend Vad of Denmark - a boxer he had previously beaten - in the final stages of which he faded.
