BIOGRAPHY

Florence Bell represented Ireland in the women’s giant slalom and slalom at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics – competing at just 17 years of age.

She did not finish the first run of the giant slalom, and was eliminated in the second run of the slalom. Bell grew up in Birmingham, England, and originally trained with the British Ski Academy. After financial difficulties struck the British ski federation around 2010, she followed her older sister Victoria’s lead and declared for Ireland. In January 2012 she was Ireland’s sole representative – male or female – at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, where her 24th place finish in slalom stood as Ireland’s best result in Olympic Alpine skiing at the time. She attended King Edward VI Handsworth School in Birmingham, where she was also a talented violinist, and subsequently studied Law at the University of Birmingham. Her sister Victoria Bell also competed in Alpine skiing for Ireland.
