BIOGRAPHY

David "Davey" Gray competed in the men's coxed four at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games alongside Iain Kennedy, Pat McDonagh, Ted Ryan and cox Noel Graham, finishing 11th of 12 boats.

The crew was remembered by Pat McDonagh as 'a four that never really gelled.' A Belfast rower, Gray was one of two Northern Irish athletes in the coxed four crew. The combination was assembled late in the quadrennial and a rudimentary training camp in Galway did little to help acclimatisation or preparation.

Despite finishing 11th - two places short of the targeted 9th - the Moscow Games represented Ireland's most ambitious rowing programme up to that point, with four crews entered across five events.
