Australia hosted what many consider the finest Olympic Games of the modern era at Sydney 2000, opened in an unforgettable ceremony in which Aboriginal Australian sprinter Cathy Freeman lit the Olympic cauldron - and went on to win the 400m final ten days later before an ecstatic home crowd.

Sonia O'Sullivan carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony and went on to win silver in the 5000 metres - Ireland's first athletics medal in sixteen years - in one of the great performances of her career. David Burrows finished 9th place in the Men's Single Handed Dinghy

Ireland won one silver medal.
