Siobhan Byrne competed for Ireland in the women's individual sabre fencing at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, becoming the first Irish woman ever to compete in Olympic fencing and the first Irish Olympian to contest women's sabre - as well as the first Irish fencer at any Games since Michael O'Brien in Barcelona 1992.
She lost in the preliminary round to Poland's Irena Więckowska 8-15. Byrne qualifies for Ireland through her father, who is from Co. Meath, and grew up in Ostfildern, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She began fencing at the age of eight in Germany and acknowledged that had she grown up in Ireland, where the sport has little mainstream following, she would almost certainly never have taken it up. She took up a fencing scholarship at Ohio State University in Columbus under coach Vladimir Nazlymov - a celebrated former Soviet champion and coach - and became one of the most decorated fencers in the programme's history: a four-time All-American from 2005 to 2008, three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, and 2008 NCAA individual silver medallist.
She graduated summa cum laude in Health Information Management and Systems. She finished one place short of qualifying for Athens 2004. She qualified for Beijing at the European qualifying tournament in Istanbul in April 2008, beating top seed Andreea Pelei of Romania 15-14 in a thrilling semi-final to secure her place - a decisive tactical advantage she attributed to her opponents' unfamiliarity with her, having competed exclusively on the US college circuit that season. She also won bronze at the 2007 Junior European Championships in Conegliano.
