BIOGRAPHY

Harry Thuillier was one of the dominant figures in Irish fencing for over two decades, a twelve-time Irish foil champion and a radio broadcaster, who competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games after the OCI's Standards Committee initially declined his selection - his admission to the Games secured through the intervention of the FIE and IOC President Sigfrid Edström.

He paid his own way to Helsinki, making the adventurous overland and sea journey through England, Holland, Germany and Sweden with his fellow fencers. On arrival at the Olympic Village, OCI officials refused the fencers entry to the Irish quarters and warned them that participation in the Opening Parade would lead to arrest.

In competition, Thuillier was unlucky to be eliminated in a barrage for fourth place in his foil group. He went on to compete at the Rome 1960 Olympics.
