Athletics 2012 Test Event

Patsy McGonagle, AAI, was given the opportunity to meet with LOCOG athletics officials on Sunday May 6th at the UK University Athletics Games, the test event for the track and field events.

Accompanied by Stephen Martin , OCI, they were joined by colleagues from the USA, Canada, and GB for the venue visit.

The delegation had an opportunity to see the key functional areas in the stadium witness how the event will operate in Games mode.

The Olympic Stadium hosted the BUCS Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships , as well over 40,000 spectators on the evening of Saturday 5 May for the ‘2012 Hours to Go’ event which saw the Stadium officially opened by a member of the audience. Many young Irish athletes studying at University in the Britain took part in the event.

2,000 athletes will compete in 47 events over a 10 day period  during the London Olympic Games making Athletics the largest single sport at the Games.

During the first comprehensive operational test of the Olympic Park at the weekend , testing focused on security processes, ticketing operations, mobility services and logistics, along with venue and sport-specific testing.

Around 11,000 workforce, including Games Makers, were in operation as LOCOG deliver six major sports events in five venues over seven days.

Over 140,000 spectators watched 3,000 athletes take part in Hockey, Wheelchair Tennis, Water Polo, Athletics, Boccia and Paralympic Athletics.

The Riverbank Arena, Eton Manor and the Water Polo Arena  hosted their first sporting competitions; the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament, Eton Manor Wheelchair Tennis International and Visa Water Polo International, where athletes  helped test the field of play, equipment, results, scoring and timing systems and workforce training.

Seb Coe, LOCOG Chair said: ‘We are now in the final stages of the testing programme. Testing the Olympic Park and its operations is a hugely important part of our plans.
