Canoeing - Congratulations to Liam Jegou!

Congratulations to Canoeing Ireland’s Liam Jegou who placed second in Junior Men’s C1 on Sunday at the ICF Slalom Junior World Championships in Penrith, Australia.

Having qualified for the finals in sixth place, Jegou went on to take the Silver medal - just losing out to German Florian Breuer. The 2014 Championship is Jegous' third time to make the junior final in this event, and represents his first time on the podium. The Junior World Championships is the start of this seasons' international racing series and Jegou will look to keep up his fine performance as goes on to compete in the Junior World Cup.

“It is great, I am really happy” Jegou said. “I have made three finals before so to finally win a medal, it is great.”

It was Liam’s first trip to Australia and he now has a new favourite course.

“It is such a great course. It is difficult but when you get it right it is really smooth and when you do not get it right it can be a nightmare” Jegou said.
“Canoeing Ireland are delighted with Liam's Silver Medal. Liam is one of the most natural paddlers I’ve seen since Eoin Rheinisch first jumped in a boat. Liam’s result will give the whole junior squad a big boost. I would like to thank Pat Hickey, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland and the Irish Sports Council, for providing the support that made this possible"
