J.J. Keane, then one of Irelands leading sports administrators was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1922 and it is now generally accepted that the Irish Olympic Council as it was known at the outset, came to existence in 1922 but due to the loss of the minutes of the early meetings of the Council, the exact date is now not known.
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Dr. Jacques Rogge was in Dublin today (May 20) where he unveiled a commemorative bronze bust of the former IOC President, Lord Killanin, at the headquarters of the Olympic Council of Ireland in Howth.

Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Cllr. Catherine Byrne has conferred the Honorary Freedom of Dublin on Olympic Gold Medallist and President of the Irish Olympians Association, Ronnie Delany and Rock Star turned Humanitarian, Bob Geldof last Sunday, 5th March. The City Council voted unanimously to grant both Ronnie and Bob this honour in light the outstanding contribution each has made in their respective spheres in athletics and humanitarianism.
