Doyle 4th in Breaststroke Final

Ireland’s Fiona Doyle came agonisingly close to her first European medal tonight as she touched 4th in the 100m Breaststroke Final at the London Aquatics Centre. Swimming in the outside lane Doyle put in a fantastic performance, missing the bronze medal by just two tenths of a second, as she came home in 1:07.76.

There was mixed emotions for Doyle who was happy with the swim but disappointed to miss a medal “I came into these games unsure of what I was going to do and to be honest I didn’t think I’d swim this fast, to get that time I’m really happy with, but getting fourth place I’m disappointed. I have big goals for the Olympics so this is good prep, I’m becoming more confident in my swimming abilities and racing at a higher level, so as disappointed as I am, this is still a fantastic place to be”.

World record holder Ruta Meilutyte won Gold in the event in 1:06.17, Hrafnhildu Luthersdottir of Iceland was second in 1:06.45 while Great Britain’s Chloe Tutton claimed Bronze in 1:07.50.

Doyle returns to the pool tomorrow for the 200m Breaststroke heats.

Shane Ryan finished 5th in his heat and 11th overall in the semi-final of the 50m Backstroke. Ryan had set a new Irish record of 25.19 seconds in this morning’s heats but a bad start in tonight’s semi-final saw him post a slower time of 25.32 seconds.

“I didn’t nail the start, I went too deep and was trying to compensate from there. I’m disappointed but I’ve just got to move on, tomorrow’s a new day” Ryan competes in the 100m Freestyle tomorrow.

Curtis Coulter will swim his first race of the championships tomorrow when he joins Shane Ryan and Jordan Sloan in the 100m Freestyle while Mona McSharry swims the 200m Breaststroke heats.
