Doyle into European Breaststroke Semi-Final

Fiona Doyle is through to the 100m Breaststroke semi-final on day 2 of racing at the LEN European Swimming Championships in London.

In a heat with two other Irish swimmers, Sycerika McMahon and Mona McSharry, Doyle finished in 5th place in 1:08.79 and progresses in 12th place overall. The 24 year old has a best time of 1:07.15 and will be looking to get close to that in the semi-final to secure a place in tomorrow’s final.

“This is really just race prep for the Olympics so I’m trying to nail every detail that I can.” Doyle said after her race “I was more nervous than I expected to be up on the blocks but it was a solid swim, my best swim of the year so far. I’m hoping to be much better in the semi-final and I think that there is definitely more to come”

Mona McSharry made her senior international debut in the Breaststroke event, the 15 year old was third at the turn in her heat but fell back to 9th to finish in 1:10.27. Sycerika McMahon warmed up for tomorrow’s 200m Individual Medley with a 1:11.18 swim.

Ireland’s only other swimmer in the pool this morning Jordan Sloan put in an impressive performance in the 200m Freestyle. The Bangor swimmer swam a lifetime best 1:49.01, missing out on a semi-final spot by just .13 of a second. He will be second reserve for tonight’s semi-final.

Racing tonight starts at 6pm with Shane Ryan in in the 100m Backstroke Final at 6.15pm followed by Fiona Doyle’s 100m Breaststroke semi-final at 6.42pm.

A further release will issue following tonight’s finals.
