London 2012 bronze medalist Michael Conlan got Ireland back to winning ways at the 2013 European Championships following an emphatic win over Armenia’s Narel Abgaryan in Minsk, Belarus tonight.
The Belfast flyweight dominated en route to a unanimous (30-27,30-27,30-27) decision at the Palace of Sport. He’ll now meet Belarus’ Siarhei Loban in the last-eight on Wednesday.
Tipperary super-heavyweight Con Sheehan was unlucky to bow out this evening after a split decision reversal to Mikheil Bakhtidze of Georgia.
Yesterday, Joe Ward’s and Ray Moylette’s quests to become the first Irish male boxers to win back-to-back European titles ended in injury and defeat.
Ward, the No. 1 seed in the light-heavyweight class, was forced to retire with just 20 seconds remaining in the third and final round after suffering a knee injury versus Poland’s Mateusz Tryc.
The Moate BC southpaw, a gold medal winner at the 2011 European Championships in Turkey, was in control of the fight at the time of the injury at the Palace of Sport venue.
Irish physio Conor McCarthy said that Ward had dislocated his left kneecap and they were awaiting the results of an X-ray.
No. 3 seed Moylette, also a gold medal winner at the 2011 Europeans, lost out on a unanimous (29-28,29-28,29-28) decision to Huseyin Karslioglu of Turkey in the light-welterweight class.
