Barcelona 1992 is remembered as one of the great Olympic Games, bringing the world to a city that used the occasion to announce itself as a global cultural capital.
On 8 August 1992, Ireland had its greatest day in Olympic boxing: Michael Carruth won gold in the welterweight final against Cuba's Juan Hernandez, Ireland's first Olympic boxing gold and first Olympic gold of any kind since Ronnie Delany in 1956, and within forty minutes Wayne McCullough won silver in the bantamweight final - also against Cuba - in one of the most celebrated afternoons in Irish sporting history.
