Paris 1924 was Ireland's first Olympic Games as an independent nation - a moment of enormous historical significance for a country that had achieved independence just two years earlier, marching into the Stade de Colombes under the name Irlande.
Jack O'Grady carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony.
Jack B. Yeats won silver in the painting competition for The Liffey Swim - Ireland's first Olympic medal. Oliver St John Gogarty won bronze in the literature competition for his Ode to the Tailteann Games. Paddy Dwyer reached the welterweight boxing semi-final - the finest Irish sporting performance of those Games - before losing to the eventual silver medallist.
Hilda Wallis and Phoebe Blair-White became the first women to compete for Ireland at the Olympics, both in tennis. The football team defeated Bulgaria before losing to the Netherlands in the quarter-final.
