About
The Winter Games came to the United States for the third time at Salt Lake City 2002, held in the shadow of the September 11 attacks of the previous year.
Tamsen McGarry, Ireland's first ever female Winter Olympian, carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony. Six Irish athletes competed across skeleton, alpine skiing, bobsleigh and cross-country skiing.
Clifton Wrottesley - the full name Clifton Hugh Lancelot de Verdon Wrottesley, 6th Baron Wrottesley - delivered the greatest result in Irish Winter Olympic history, lying third after his first skeleton run and missing a bronze medal by just 0.42 seconds after his second.
