About Skiing
Skiing is one Olympic sport, contested through six disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined (with Ski Mountaineering added as an additional sport for Milano Cortina 2026 only). Ireland has been represented in four of these disciplines.
Alpine SkiingAlpine skiing is raced down a marked course on snow, in disciplines ranging from the technical, tightly turning slalom to the high-speed downhill, with times measured to hundredths of a second. Ireland has been represented in Alpine skiing across multiple Winter Games, with Jack Gower's 12th-place finish in the Alpine combined at Beijing 2022 standing as one of Ireland's best Winter Olympic results.
Cross-Country SkiingThe discipline is raced over long, undulating snow courses using either the classic diagonal-stride technique or the faster skating technique, in individual and relay formats over varying distances. Ireland has competed in cross-country skiing at recent Winter Games, including Thomas Maloney Westgaard's 14th-place finish in the 15km classic at Beijing 2022.
Freestyle SkiingFreestyle skiing is contested across disciplines that include moguls, aerials, halfpipe and slopestyle, in which skiers are judged on the technical difficulty, execution and style of jumps and tricks performed on a course of bumps or through the air. Ben Lynch became the first Irish skier ever to reach a Winter Olympics final on snow, qualifying for the men's halfpipe final at Milano Cortina 2026 and finishing eighth, one of Ireland's best Winter Olympic results to date.
SnowboardingOlympic snowboarding spans disciplines including halfpipe, slopestyle, snowboard cross and parallel giant slalom, ranging from judged, trick-based events to head-to-head racing down a course. Ireland has been represented in snowboarding by Seamus O'Connor, who became the first Irish athlete to compete at three Winter Olympic Games with his appearance at Beijing 2022, where he finished 15th in the halfpipe.
